About the position

The Assistant Integration Engineer will play a crucial role in supporting the commissioning of various complex utility projects and programs. This includes working with supervisory control and data acquisition systems, packet-based networks, distribution automation, cyber security measures, microwave radios, wireless networks (including 4G/5G PLTE), fiber optics, and smart grid applications. The position requires fieldwork, where the Assistant Integration Engineer will assist project teams and subcontractors in the installation of electronic equipment, cabling, and provide field engineering, commissioning, and start-up solutions for project designs developed by the Networks, Integration & Automation (NIA) team for client projects across the nation. Key responsibilities include performing pre-engineering site visits according to defined checklists, overseeing installations by self-perform or subcontractors, and assessing the physical installation readiness for commissioning based on design specifications. The role also involves making physical changes as per design specifications, such as installing fiber and copper cabling, mounting devices, and conducting various tests on cables and devices using specialized tools. The Assistant Integration Engineer will be responsible for powering on devices, confirming successful device turn-up, and ensuring compliance with industry standards during commissioning and client application verification. In addition to fieldwork, the Assistant Integration Engineer may assist senior engineers with office-based engineering design support during periods without fieldwork. This includes supporting the design of telecommunications networks, preparing project deliverables, and executing complex assignments that may involve the development of new or improved processes and technologies. The role requires effective communication with clients and project teams to ensure project deliverables meet client satisfaction and adhere to internal quality assurance guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with commissioning support for utility projects and programs.
  • Perform pre-engineering site visits per defined checklists.
  • Oversee self-perform or subcontractor installation.
  • Assess physical installation readiness for commissioning based on design specifications.
  • Make physical changes based on design specifications, including cabling and device installation.
  • Perform testing of cables, pinouts, fiber, and automation points using applicable tools.
  • Power on devices and conduct visual confirmation of successful device turn-up.
  • Connect to devices and load base configurations per industry standards.
  • Commission site and verify client applications according to accepted standards.
  • Troubleshoot device-based, electronic, and application tests as needed.
  • Review and update intermediate level as-built documentation for client publication.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with client field staff regarding project scope and progress.
  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.
  • Assist with office-based engineering design support during gaps in field work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.
  • Or Bachelor of Science in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Master of Science degree in Engineering may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • Successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without requiring future sponsorship for employment visa status.
  • Previous intern experience with utility telecommunications projects preferred, especially field-based assignments.
  • Interest and experience working in mission-critical environments (military, utility, industrial, transportation, etc.) or related field strongly preferred.
  • Strong aptitude and interest in learning troubleshooting skills and understanding of electrical and communications systems and industry standards.
  • Engineering in Training registration preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to apply intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad assignments and devise new approaches to problems encountered.
  • Ability to handle large volumes of work and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience.
