About the position

L.L. Bean is currently searching for an Assistant Manager - Accounting to join the Finance team located in Freeport, Maine. This position is crucial as it involves supervising assigned accounting personnel and coordinating financial reporting, analysis, and management reporting activities. The Assistant Manager will assist in reviewing financial results with senior management, helping to identify strategies necessary to meet financial goals. The role offers flexibility, allowing for hybrid work, with some days from home and some at the corporate headquarters. Additionally, remote work is an option for candidates based in several states including Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin. In this role, the Assistant Manager will supervise accounting personnel, making employment decisions and recommendations, establishing performance objectives, assigning and directing work, and monitoring performance. They will coach and develop employees through work assignments, direct training, and regular feedback. The Assistant Manager will also administer and recommend wages and salaries, resolve routine personnel problems, and assist employees in identifying personal development needs. Furthermore, they will communicate company policies and procedures and monitor staffing levels to meet work requirements. The Assistant Manager will oversee various accounting functions, including revenue and right to return accounting, lease accounting, fixed asset and prepaid asset accounting, expense accruals, and duty reclamation and audit processing. They will support the financial reporting process by assisting in the monthly, tax, and year-end closing processes, supervising staff, and ensuring the quality and integrity of data and analyses. The role also involves preparing company financial statements in accordance with US GAAP and reviewing current accounting procedures for improvement. The Assistant Manager will work closely with senior management to review financial statements and support year-end audits, ensuring compliance with internal policies and US GAAP. Additionally, they will lead projects for implementing new accounting standards and represent finance on project teams as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Support the financial reporting process by assisting in the monthly, tax, and year-end closing processes and supervising staff.
  • Assist in the preparation of company financial statements in accordance with US GAAP.
  • Review and evaluate current accounting procedures and offer suggestions for improvement.
  • Work with senior management to review monthly and year-end financial statements.
  • Ensure the quality and integrity of data, data usage, and analyses.
  • Assist in reporting requirements related to year-end audits and tax close.
  • Review work of others for completeness and accuracy in accordance with internal policy and US GAAP.
  • Support the year-end financial statement audit with the audit firm and work with auditors to address issues as they arise.
  • Update and improve existing reports to provide maximum usefulness and accuracy of data.
  • Define and recommend controls to ensure the quality and integrity of data and reporting.
  • Act as finance representation on project teams as necessary and lead projects for implementing new accounting standards.

Requirements

  • 4-Year Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in accounting or finance.
  • CPA certification is required.
