About the position

The Assistant Manager for Baseball and Athletic Grounds Services at Point Loma Nazarene University is responsible for maintaining and enhancing athletic landscapes, with a primary focus on the baseball field. This role involves daily fieldwork, supervising groundskeeping staff, and ensuring high standards of field preparation. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in sports turf management and demonstrate excellent leadership skills, contributing to a safe and visually appealing environment for athletes and spectators.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily maintenance of athletic landscapes, including mowing, irrigation, fertilization, aeration, and planting.
  • Prepare athletic fields for practices, games, and special events, ensuring proper lining, dragging, and surface preparation.
  • Supervise, train, and schedule groundskeeping staff and student workers for efficient work performance.
  • Provide training and development opportunities for staff in sports turf management.
  • Manage inventory, maintenance, and operation of groundskeeping equipment and tools.
  • Assist in developing and managing the grounds services budget for cost-effective resource use.
  • Conduct regular safety training and inspections to promote a culture of safety.
  • Communicate regularly with various directors regarding the state of the grounds and any arising issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Turf Management, Horticulture, Sports Management, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in sports turf management, focusing on soccer field maintenance.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Strong knowledge of sports turf management practices, including irrigation systems, pest control, and soil management.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Pesticide applicator's license preferred.
  • Evidence of Christian commitment and active church involvement.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with budget management in grounds services.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and practices in groundskeeping.
