About the position

The Assistant Manager, Operational Accounting at Navy Federal Credit Union is responsible for leading a team of accountants in executing the financial accounting processes of the organization. This role requires a thorough understanding of federal and industry regulations and standards to ensure the accurate reconciliation and maintenance of financial statements and reports. The Assistant Manager will assist in developing the operational strategy and ensure alignment with the division and corporate goals. This position plays a critical role in overseeing accounting activities, ensuring compliance with accounting principles such as GAAP, and managing the resolution of discrepancies in financial records. In this role, the Assistant Manager will collaborate across the Enterprise to ensure timely and accurate recording of transactions and accounting activities. This includes conducting analytical reviews to verify the completeness and accuracy of transactions and account balances. The Assistant Manager will also partner with the Accounting Policy team to maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and will supervise the classification of transactions and the resolution of misapplied funds. Additionally, the role involves interpreting emerging accounting policies and making recommendations for internal practices to ensure compliance. The Assistant Manager will lead in-depth analyses to identify and resolve discrepancies, contributing to quality control and process improvement. This includes managing complex discrepancies and preparing recommendations for immediate action or policy changes to prevent financial losses. The position requires maintaining collaborative relationships with various teams, including Product Optimization, and facilitating the implementation of new systems and process improvements. Furthermore, the Assistant Manager will respond to inquiries from management regarding financial results and complex accounting transactions, ensuring that staff are advised on handling non-routine reporting transactions. The role also involves developing a talent strategy to ensure team performance is measured and rewarded, and providing timely feedback to support team development. The Assistant Manager will perform supervisory responsibilities, including staffing, performance appraisals, and ensuring alignment of team goals with the overall strategy of the division.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in overseeing and directing accounting activities to ensure financial records reflect proper application of industry standards, including account reconciliations, analytics, and variance analysis.
  • Collaborate across the Enterprise to ensure timely and accurate recording of transactions and accounting activities, including analytical reviews for completeness and accuracy.
  • Partner with the Accounting Policy team to ensure compliance with accounting standards (e.g., GAAP) and regulatory requirements (e.g., NCUA).
  • Supervise and ensure proper classification of transactions and resolution of misapplied funds or outstanding items.
  • Interpret emerging accounting policies and recommend changes to internal practices for compliance.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis to identify, isolate, and resolve discrepancies; contribute to quality control and process improvement.
  • Lead the investigation and resolution of complex discrepancies and data entry errors; prepare recommendations for immediate action or policy changes.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with the Product Optimization team to facilitate the implementation of new systems and process improvements.
  • Respond to inquiries from management regarding financial results and complex accounting transactions; advise staff on handling non-routine reporting transactions.
  • Stay abreast of and ensure compliance with federal/state and industry standards, company practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Develop talent strategy to ensure expectations are understood, performance is measured, and feedback is provided timely.
  • Collaborate with various teams to provide subject matter expertise on processes and assist with writing business requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability and desire to lead a team and develop talent strategy for operational efficiency.
  • Significant experience in supervising, coaching, and training team members in complex accounting rules.
  • Experience in public or private accounting with complex accounting treatments and issue resolution.
  • Advanced knowledge of SOX control environment, including documentation and testing of controls.
  • Experience in researching technical accounting issues and making recommendations for accounting principles.
  • Working knowledge of financial and accounting systems (e.g., PeopleSoft General Ledger).
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and presenting complex financial information clearly.
  • Highly proficient in resolving conflicting requests and meeting changing requirements with good judgment.
  • Experience in initiating, managing, and executing change.
  • Advanced analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills.
  • Advanced organizational, planning, and time management skills.
  • Advanced skills in building effective relationships and influencing business partners.
  • Advanced interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
