About the position

The Assistant News Editor plays a crucial role in overseeing editorial operations and driving coverage on priority topics for the Dayton Daily News. This position requires strong management and leadership skills, as well as a deep understanding of digital content creation and performance metrics. The editor will guide journalists in producing engaging digital content and will collaborate with various teams to ensure timely and impactful news coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee editorial operations of news teams and drive coverage on priority topics.
  • Communicate clear expectations for quality digital content that is informative and engaging.
  • Analyze digital performance metrics to shape coverage around key topics.
  • Coach and help reporters in shaping digital content ideas and execution.
  • Collaborate with editorial and product teams to plan strong digital content.
  • Deliver content for print products as needed.
  • Guide journalists in creating well-crafted digital content with appropriate visuals.
  • Lead a staff to cover important local topics and news from key communities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline and 6 years' experience in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1+ year of experience in a management or lead role.
  • Three years of experience at a news media organization (local, digital, newspaper, TV, radio, etc.).
  • Knowledge and experience with digital publishing tools (such as a CMS, social media channels, etc.).
  • Ability to lead longer-term projects and initiatives in the content department and organization at large.
  • Familiarity with using digital engagement metrics to inform coverage topics.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in digital storytelling across multiple formats including video, audio, and graphics.
  • Proficiency in reporting using records and databases.
  • Understanding of state and federal laws relating to public records and public meetings.
