About the position

The Assistant Nurse Manager for Surgery Specialty Services at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics is a leadership role responsible for overseeing the delivery of care processes within a specific surgical unit. This position involves collaborating with administrative and clinical nursing staff to enhance patient care, manage daily operations, and ensure compliance with nursing standards. Responsibilities

  • Participates in the assessment and evaluation of nursing care requirements for the patient population.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of standards of care for a patient population.
  • Monitors and contributes to individual patient care and discharge planning activities.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to implement care planning activities.
  • Serves as a role model for staff by demonstrating clinical expertise in direct patient care.
  • Practices according to department policies to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Collaborates with the Nurse Manager to assist with implementation of strategic plans.
  • Implements planned change to optimize unit functioning.
  • Participates in monitoring staff competency and provides constructive feedback.
  • Collaborates in the development and evaluation of the Quality Management program.
  • Uses relevant nursing research to improve clinical practice and participates in research activities.
  • Analyzes and uses data to guide operational and patient care decisions.
  • Monitors and evaluates nursing personnel as delegated according to established criteria.
  • Participates in the implementation of current regulatory standards for accreditation.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates patient/family health education activities.
  • Facilitates opportunities for nursing staff to improve clinical knowledge and skills.
  • Coordinates implementation of specific action plans at the unit level.

Requirements

  • A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire.
  • 1+ years of nursing experience with demonstrated skills in leadership.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent problem solving, decision making, and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency with computer software applications.
  • Skill in leadership/management.
  • Demonstrates time management and organization of workload.
