About the position
The Assistant Nurse Manager for Surgery Specialty Services at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics is a leadership role responsible for overseeing the delivery of care processes within a specific surgical unit. This position involves collaborating with administrative and clinical nursing staff to enhance patient care, manage daily operations, and ensure compliance with nursing standards. The role emphasizes patient-centered care for post-operative patients and requires strong leadership and communication skills to guide nursing staff and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams.
Responsibilities
- Participates in the assessment and evaluation of nursing care requirements for the patient population.
- Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of standards of care for a patient population.
- Monitors and contributes to individual patient care and discharge planning activities.
- Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to implement care planning activities.
- Serves as a role model for staff by demonstrating clinical expertise in direct patient care.
- Practices according to department policies to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
- Collaborates with the Nurse Manager to assist with implementation of strategic plans.
- Implements planned change to optimize unit functioning.
- Participates in monitoring staff competency and provides constructive feedback.
- Collaborates in the development and evaluation of the Quality Management program.
- Uses relevant nursing research to improve clinical practice and participates in research activities.
- Analyzes and uses data to guide operational and patient care decisions.
- Monitors and evaluates nursing personnel as delegated according to established criteria.
- Participates in the implementation of current regulatory standards for accreditation.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates patient/family health education activities.
- Facilitates opportunities for nursing staff to improve clinical knowledge and skills.
- Coordinates implementation of specific action plans at the unit level.
Requirements
- A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is required.
- Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire.
- 1+ years of nursing experience with demonstrated skills in leadership.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent problem solving, decision making, and critical thinking skills.
- Proficiency with computer software applications.
- Skill in leadership/management.
- Demonstrates time management and organization of workload.
