About the position

The Meat Plant Assistant Operations Manager at the University of Wisconsin-Madison will assist in managing the operations of the Meat Science & Animal Biologics Discovery (MSABD) USDA-inspected plant. This role involves overseeing day-to-day operations, participating in research and teaching projects, and providing training for new staff. The position also includes responsibilities in production planning, enforcing food safety practices, and managing budgets.

Responsibilities

  • Provides technical expertise, budget oversight, and/or staff supervision for a client-based research program to advance research.
  • Assists with the design, monitoring, and execution of project-specific experiments, identifying and resolving technical issues.
  • May direct the day-to-day activities of staff and resolve routine personnel issues.
  • Develops and facilitates research specific presentations to internal and external audiences.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert and unit liaison, providing updates on project components and timelines to stakeholders as needed.
  • Develops operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and unit objectives.
  • Assists with the development and auditing of project-specific budgets.
  • Helps manage the food safety HACCP Plan for MSABD USDA inspected plant.
  • Performs microbiological testing of processing plant and products; maintains records of results.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field; Master's Degree preferred.
  • Good organizational, management, and office skills including time management and communication.
  • Demonstrated experience handling, compiling, and organizing data in a timely manner.
  • Experience with databases and spreadsheets, particularly Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.

Nice-to-haves

  • 1 year of prior experience working in the Animal Science field.
  • Experience in the meat industry.
