About the position

The Assistant or Associate General Counsel - Research position at UNC Charlotte is a permanent, full-time role within the Office of Legal Affairs, which provides comprehensive legal advice and assistance on matters affecting the university. The incumbent will serve as the primary attorney on research-related matters, addressing a wide range of legal issues including intellectual property, compliance, export controls, and conflicts of interest. This role requires the ability to manage multiple, unrelated legal matters concurrently, and the attorney will work closely with other legal staff, administrators, and faculty within the Division of Research. The position is designed for an individual who can operate both independently and collaboratively, providing legal guidance that supports the university's research mission. The selected candidate will be expected to research, draft, and provide legal advice on state and federal laws, regulations, and policies applicable to the university's operations. Depending on the candidate's experience, they will be classified as either Assistant or Associate General Counsel, with the latter requiring a more extensive background in relevant legal practice.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and assistance on all legal aspects of research at the university.
  • Handle matters related to intellectual property, compliance, export controls, and conflicts of interest.
  • Research and draft communications and legal documents regarding applicable laws and regulations.
  • Collaborate with other attorneys in the Office of Legal Affairs and staff in the Division of Research.
  • Complete complex projects independently and with direction from senior legal staff.
  • Assist in advising on research-related matters as required by the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Integrity and General Counsel.

Requirements

  • J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • For Assistant General Counsel: at least 1 year of relevant, post-law school experience.
  • For Associate General Counsel: at least 5 years of relevant, post-law school experience.
  • Prior experience advising on research-related matters as an attorney for a university or equivalent experience.
