About the position

The Assistant Planner position at NV5 is an entry-level role focused on supporting the Planning department in Parsippany, NJ. The role involves collaborating on various projects aimed at enhancing community infrastructure, including Complete Streets, Vision Zero initiatives, and park design. The Assistant Planner will engage in GIS mapping, public outreach, and the production of project deliverables, contributing to the overall mission of promoting healthy lifestyles and community vitality through effective planning and design.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate on projects related to Complete Streets, Vision Zero, transit access, greenways, streetscapes, park design, and community placemaking.
  • Conduct GIS mapping and analysis.
  • Assist in the development of Active Transportation/Bicycle/Pedestrian Master Plans and route and facility planning.
  • Support the creation of Vision Zero Plans, crash/safety assessments, and road safety audits.
  • Produce project deliverables including data collection, writing, editing, research, and graphic development.
  • Create conceptual designs, graphics, and renderings.
  • Participate in public outreach activities, including virtual and in-person meetings, and develop outreach materials such as input boards and surveys.
  • Attend in-office activities, public outreach events, and field trips as needed.

Requirements

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree in planning, landscape architecture, engineering, or a related field; a graduate degree is desirable.
  • 2-5 years of similar experience in a consulting firm or public agency.
  • Strong communication skills with excellent writing and graphics capabilities.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), ArcGIS, AutoCAD, or other industry software.
  • Collaborative spirit and ability to succeed in a hybrid work environment.
  • Ability to participate in fieldwork and in-person project meetings within the region.
  • Interest in pursuing AICP and NJ Professional Planner license is desirable.
