About the position

The Assistant Planner position at the City of Fargo involves supporting the Planning Administrator in the planning and implementation of department projects and programs. The role focuses on data collection, research, and analysis to prepare various planning documents, reports, and presentations. The Assistant Planner will engage with the public and other stakeholders to ensure compliance with urban planning regulations and contribute to positive outcomes for the community.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and interpret data and information for plans and reports.
  • Create and write staff reports on planning projects, studies, and proposals.
  • Prepare maps, photos, tables, and charts for planning reports and presentations.
  • Analyze proposals and applications for compliance with ordinances and policies.
  • Identify environmental, economic, or legal impacts of proposals and suggest solutions.
  • Support senior planning staff in negotiations for positive outcomes.
  • Communicate effectively with the public regarding department policies and procedures.
  • Review site plans for compliance with the Land Development Code.
  • Research project files and ordinances for site plan reviews.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating zoning records of the City.
  • Participate in special meetings for neighborhood plans and other planning activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning or Landscape Architecture.
  • At least 1 year of municipal planning experience or internship.
  • Valid driver's license or equivalent mobility.
  • Knowledge of public administration and urban planning regulations.
  • Skill in organization, statistics, and data interpretation.
  • Ability to perform mathematical computations and prepare PowerPoint presentations.
  • Knowledge of computer software used in planning, including ArcView and AutoCAD.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with GIS and graphic representation of data.
  • Familiarity with land development codes and local/state land use regulations.

Benefits

  • Full-time position with a salary range of $60,632.00 - $64,209.60 per year.
