About the position

The Assistant Planner will support the Deputy Director of Planning by conducting planning and research activities, participating in special projects, and preparing reports related to development proposals. This role involves interpreting data, codes, and laws, as well as assisting the public with planning inquiries and ensuring compliance with city regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct planning and research activities and participate in various planning special projects.
  • Assist staff with current planning activities and serve as contact for various projects and research as assigned.
  • Communicate with various City staff regarding project evaluation.
  • Participate in the review and processing of development proposals and make recommendations as appropriate.
  • Coordinate communications with the County planning department and other outside organizations regarding development proposals.
  • Interpret data, codes, State laws, City ordinances, and development standards for specific planning projects.
  • Assist with preparing or revising planning ordinances.
  • Review major planning projects, variances, conditional use permits, site plans, design reviews, other zoning permits, business licenses, and minor building permits to assure compliance to codes and design standards.
  • Assist the general public with questions regarding planning issues, City zone restrictions, and general City planning guidelines.
  • Perform general office duties including collecting data and fees, answering phones, and assisting the public at the counter.
  • Attend community and public meetings as requested; attend workshops and seminars related to planning activities; make presentations to the City Council, Planning Commission, and other designated meetings.
  • Perform field observations and investigations; drive a vehicle to various sites to conduct work.
  • Operate a computer and assigned software including graphic programs and Geographical Information System (GIS); operate a variety of standard office equipment; utilize design tools as assigned.
  • Prepare a variety of reports related to assigned planning activities; communicate with various City departments including police, fire, redevelopment, economic development, and others to develop planning documents.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, urban planning, or a related field.
  • One year of experience in planning or a related field, or two years of experience with 60 college-level semester units toward a bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Valid California Class C driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with GIS and other computer software applications utilized in the Planning Department.
  • Knowledge of City zoning codes and General Plan.
  • Familiarity with urban design and planning practices.
