About the position

The Assistant Planner position at the City of Bend involves performing routine planning activities within the Current Planning Division. The role requires effective communication with the public and city staff, assisting at the Permit Center, and processing planning applications and building permits. A foundational knowledge of urban planning principles, city geography, and technical writing is beneficial for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Staffs the Permit Center counter, providing information and assistance to citizens, project applicants, developers, architects, engineers, and internal staff regarding zoning, land use, and planning issues.
  • Schedules, prepares, and distributes planning materials and routine reports for pre-application and advisory meetings.
  • Receives, logs, and tracks plan submittals; reviews building permits and zoning letters for planning and zoning issues.
  • Organizes and maintains departmental case files and related materials.
  • Complies with safety requirements and promotes safe work practices.
  • Responds to ensure restoration of essential public services during emergencies.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Planning, Geography, or a closely related field.
  • At least six months of customer service experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Six months of experience or internship in a Planning function preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of applicable codes, rules, laws, and regulations.
  • Basic urban planning principles.
