About the position

The Assistant Planner position at Clinton County involves supporting the Planning & Zoning Director in the interpretation and enforcement of zoning ordinances and the Comprehensive Plan. The role includes assisting residents, business owners, and developers with zoning requirements, providing staff support to various planning committees, and conducting site inspections related to zoning compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Investigates zoning ordinance complaints and works towards compliance, issues tickets, writes field correction/violation notices, and writes warrant requests as necessary.
  • Responds to inquiries from developers, owners, architects, contractors, and local officials regarding planning and zoning regulations and procedures.
  • Assists the Planning & Zoning Director in conducting site inspections related to zoning ordinance requirements, including site plan reviews and special land use permits.
  • Provides staff support and attends Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, and County Board of Commissioners meetings as necessary.
  • Explains zoning ordinance and regulations related to land use.
  • Assists in conducting studies and developing long-range development plans to guide community development and land use planning.
  • Assists the Planning & Zoning Director with preparation of the annual departmental budget as needed.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in urban and/or regional planning or other relevant degree and/or experience.
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in planning & zoning and experience in land use planning, reviews for site plans, special land use, rezoning, and variance applications at the county/municipal level.
  • Extensive knowledge in the use of office equipment and technology, including Microsoft Suite applications, database entry, GIS, and the ability to learn new software programs applicable to the position.
  • Valid Michigan Vehicle Operator's License.
