About the position

The City of Simi Valley is seeking an Assistant Planner to join our team in a full-time capacity. This position offers an exciting opportunity for individuals interested in urban planning and making impactful land use decisions. As an Assistant Planner, you will play a crucial role in improving the built environment and assisting the public in understanding complex regulations related to building design, land development, and city zoning standards. You will be responsible for conducting public counter operations, providing code interpretations, and producing professional quality comprehensive staff reports and related documents. This role requires strong project management skills, excellent writing abilities, and the capacity to articulate complex issues clearly to a diverse audience. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced municipal environment and possess a strong work ethic, organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively. The position operates on a regular full-time basis with an alternative 9/80 work schedule, allowing for alternating Mondays or Fridays off. The salary range for this position is $35.83 to $45.86 per hour, accompanied by a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation and review of planning documents and reports.
  • Conduct public counter operations and provide code interpretations to the public.
  • Assist in the review of land use applications and zoning compliance.
  • Prepare professional quality staff reports and related documents.
  • Participate in community outreach and public engagement activities.
  • Support project management for various planning initiatives and projects.
  • Collaborate with other city departments and stakeholders on planning-related matters.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in planning, geography, public administration, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Strong writing skills and the ability to produce comprehensive reports.
  • At least one year of planning experience is desirable.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to work on multiple projects with competing deadlines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in public administration or urban planning.
  • Familiarity with city zoning standards and land use regulations.
