About the position

The Assistant Planner position at the City of Bakersfield is an entry-level role within the Development Services Department. The role focuses on gaining experience in land use planning processes and procedures, including the coordination and processing of various planning applications. The Assistant Planner will develop a foundational understanding of planning principles, practices, and relevant laws, particularly the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

Responsibilities

  • Learn and apply the Zoning Ordinance and General Plan of the City of Bakersfield.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and prepare required environmental documentation.
  • Prepare technical staff reports for conditional use permits, zoning modifications, and other planning entitlements for the Planning Commission, City Council, and other boards.
  • Process site plan review applications.
  • Assist with investigating requests for zoning changes, tract maps, parcel maps, and general plan amendments.
  • Compile and update census and demographic information.
  • Answer questions for the citizenry at the public counter.
  • Provide administrative support to staff on various planning projects.
  • Conduct background work for special planning studies and make field studies for planning projects.

Requirements

  • Entry-level position requiring knowledge of planning principles and practices.
  • Understanding of environmental law, specifically the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
