About the position

The City of Carlsbad is seeking an Assistant Planner to join its Planning Division within the Community Development Department. This role is essential in supporting both Current and Advance Planning initiatives, focusing on research, city-initiated planning developments, and discretionary permits. The Assistant Planner will engage with the public, perform plan checks, and ensure compliance with city regulations, contributing to the overall quality of life in Carlsbad through effective urban planning and community engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Support Current Planning or Advance Planning in research and city-initiated planning developments.
  • Assist in processing discretionary permits with an emphasis on administratively approved projects.
  • Perform duties at the public information counter, responding to requests for information.
  • Conduct plan checks for building, grading, and subdivisions of land.
  • Review sign permit applications and provide guidance to citizens and developers during the application process.
  • Prepare planning reports and utilize GIS products/maps for project analysis.
  • Organize and participate in public workshops and hearings.
  • Present staff reports to the Planning Commission and City Council.
  • Conduct site inspections and field research for proposed development sites.
  • Research and prepare ordinances, policies, and General Plan amendments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in planning or a related field.
  • Minimum of one year of related work experience in planning or a similar role.
  • Master's degree in planning, public administration, or a related field is desirable.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Basic understanding of municipal planning principles, procedures, and methods.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with GIS software and applications.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local planning laws, ordinances, and policies.
