About the position

At Smithfield Foods, we are seeking an Assistant Plant Controller to join our team in Sioux Falls, SD. This position plays a crucial role in supporting the plant controller by directing the accounting support to our production facility. The Assistant Plant Controller will be responsible for various accounting functions including cost accounting, inventory control, accounts payable, payroll, billing, and the preparation of plant financial and control reports. This role is integral to maintaining the accuracy of manufacturing, inventory, and finished goods ledgers, as well as overseeing cost accounting activities. The successful candidate will compile and analyze operating performance reports, prepare and analyze unusual items on financial reports, and participate in plant management meetings. They will assist plant management in preparing quarterly review graphs and routine items, as well as contribute to operations improvement activities. The Assistant Plant Controller will also provide training and support for SAP, ADC, and other related systems, while actively collaborating with purchasing and maintenance departments to reduce inventory balances and free up capital. In terms of controllership, this position is responsible for protecting company assets, ensuring inventory results and balances are reconciled and valued accurately per corporate policy, and ensuring compliance with SOX and annual internal auditing. The Assistant Plant Controller will administer the bill of materials audits and corrections, distribute material and labor variances to plant personnel, and report variances to both plant and corporate personnel monthly. Additionally, they will spend time on the production floor to enhance their understanding of processes and report general ledger entries by the first preliminary cutoff. The role also involves human resource management responsibilities, including effective communication with staff, managing performance, developing staff, and managing overtime. This position is not only about numbers but also about leading a team and fostering a positive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support the plant controller in directing accounting support to the production facility.
  • Manage cost accounting, inventory control, accounts payable, payroll, and billing.
  • Prepare plant financial and control reports.
  • Compile and analyze operating performance reports.
  • Participate in plant management meetings and assist in preparing materials for meetings.
  • Provide SAP, ADC, and other related system training and support.
  • Identify opportunities for operational improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with SOX and internal auditing processes.
  • Administer bill of materials audits and corrections.
  • Distribute material and labor variances to plant personnel on a daily basis.
  • Report monthly variances to corporate personnel.
  • Spend time on the production floor to enhance understanding of processes.
  • Manage staff performance and development in the Accounting Department.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field.
  • 3 years of professional accounting experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in providing training, coaching, or mentoring to less experienced staff.
  • Knowledge of accounting software and Microsoft Office, specifically advanced Excel including Pivot Tables.
  • Strong leadership skills and understanding of cost accounting concepts.
  • SAP experience preferred.
  • Solid mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
