About the position

The Assistant Principal/Building Athletic Director at South High School will play a pivotal role in fostering a culturally responsive and inclusive community that empowers all students to develop their unique potential and thrive as learners, citizens, and leaders in a diverse global community. This position is part of the South High School leadership team and operates under the direction of the Principal. The Assistant Principal will be responsible for supervising and evaluating professional and support staff, carrying out disciplinary procedures related to student tardiness and attendance, and overseeing the implementation of the District's Mission and Belief statements. Additionally, the Assistant Principal will assist in screening, interviewing, and recommending candidates for professional and support staff positions, participate in fire emergency drills, and serve as a member of the Child Study Teams. The role also includes supervising evening and weekend activities, ensuring proper chaperone supervision at school events, and effectively assuming all responsibilities of the Principal in their absence. As the Building Athletic Director, the successful candidate will oversee the day-to-day supervision of the interscholastic athletic program, assist in recruiting and evaluating coaches, promote positive school spirit, and ensure compliance with all relevant rules and regulations. Responsibilities also include scheduling athletic events, arranging student transportation, maintaining an accurate inventory of athletic equipment, and preparing end-of-season reports. The Assistant Principal/Building Athletic Director will communicate effectively with the administrative team and other stakeholders to ensure a positive and productive educational environment.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and evaluate professional and support staff assigned to the building.
  • Carry out disciplinary procedures related to student tardiness and attendance as established by the District.
  • Oversee and implement procedures for screening, interviewing, and recommending candidates for professional and support staff positions.
  • Participate in and support the implementation of all fire emergency drills and procedures.
  • Serve as a member of the Child Study Teams.
  • Supervise evening and weekend activities with other building administrators.
  • Provide proper chaperone supervision and student security at school dances and other evening functions.
  • Assume all responsibilities of the Principal in the Principal's absence.
  • Communicate and work effectively with the administrative team, including participating in team meetings.
  • Communicate and work effectively with administrative assistants in both the athletic and main offices.
  • Assume responsibility for other tasks as assigned by the Principal.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the interscholastic athletic program at the high school.
  • Assist the Instructional Director for Health, Physical Education, and Athletics in recruiting, selecting, and recommending coaches to the Principal.
  • Assist the Principal in the evaluation of all coaches.
  • Promote positive school spirit and communication through daily announcements, school website, and social media.
  • Ensure coaching staffs comply with all rules and regulations of the District, ECIC, Section VI, and State governing interscholastic athletics.
  • Educate coaches and athletes regarding rules and regulations contained in the Williamsville Coaches' Manual and the NYSPHSAA Handbook.
  • Approve and schedule all athletic events, including facilities and turf usage by the community.
  • Arrange for student transportation for athletic events.
  • Develop ticket-selling procedures and work with the student group overseeing the concession stand.
  • Monitor scheduling and voucher completion for officials.
  • Arrange re-scheduling of athletic contests as needed.
  • Compile and distribute master schedule for each season to relevant parties.
  • Coordinate crowd control efforts and assign supplementary personnel for athletic events.
  • Communicate with grounds crew to ensure playing fields are properly marked and conditioned.
  • Ensure coaches are aware of medical and emergency procedures.
  • Supervise facilities before and after athletic contests.
  • Assist in determining needs and creating the interscholastic athletic budget for the school.
  • Maintain an accurate current inventory of athletic equipment and supplies.
  • Check in new supplies/equipment and distribute to coaches.
  • Collect equipment and supplies from coaches and assess program needs.
  • Assist in processing student eligibility forms and submit forms for athletic injuries to relevant parties.
  • Award pins and letters to eligible athletes in accordance with District guidelines.
  • Prepare and submit end-of-season reports to the Principal and ID-HPEA.

Requirements

  • A minimum of five (5) years of successful experience in education, including teaching, supervision, and/or administration.
  • A valid New York State Certificate as a School Administrator and Supervisor (SAS), School District Administrator (SDA), or School District Leader (SBL) by the Board appointment date.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and work effectively with staff members, colleagues, parents, and others in the educational community.
  • Creative problem-solving and decision-making skills to provide a positive learning environment resulting in continuous improvement for students and staff.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Willingness to contribute as a member of the administrative team.
  • Coaching experience and/or experience as athletic program supervisor (or similar).
  • Graduate-level education and/or experience with emphasis on high school (9-12) instruction, curriculum, supervision, and/or administration, and/or sports administration course work.
