About the position

The School of Art and Design at Eastern Michigan University is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Art History, starting August 2025. This role is part of a collaborative faculty cluster focusing on various disciplines, including Art History, and aims to align with the University’s Civil Rights and Social Justice Center. The position emphasizes teaching, curriculum development, and community engagement, particularly in the context of premodern art and social justice initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Teach three courses per semester, primarily in art history, including surveys and upper-level classes.
  • Instruct the ancient through medieval survey course (ARTH 162).
  • Develop new courses and contribute to the re-envisioning of the art history curriculum.
  • Engage with the Civil Rights and Social Justice Center's initiatives.
  • Participate in the College in Prison Program and intercollegiate collaborations with HBCUs.
  • Contribute to campus programming, including EMU galleries.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Art History or a related field (completed by August 2025).
  • Expertise in premodern art history, globally defined.
  • Evidence of scholarly potential and commitment to teaching excellence.
  • Enthusiasm for undergraduate teaching and pedagogical creativity.
  • Commitment to working with diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
