About the position

The Department of Biological Sciences at Prairie View A&M University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, starting in Fall 2024. The appointment of a Tenure-Track (TT) Assistant Professor specializing in Histology or Anatomy & Physiology directly addresses the imperative of maintaining a robust foundation in the natural sciences, crucial for bolstering enrollment and retention rates, particularly among Biology majors. This position aligns with the department's staffing needs by addressing the demand for tailored instruction within the Biology program. The Biology department has the highest student enrollment in the Arts & Sciences. By focusing on teaching General Biology and other relevant courses, the TT Assistant Professor will enhance student engagement, support academic success, and contribute to the overall mission of the university. This recruitment underscores our commitment to providing quality education, fostering academic excellence, and nurturing future leaders in the biological sciences. This appointment begins Fall 2024.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses, advise students, participate in curriculum and program development, serve on Committees.
  • Actively engage in scholarly activities aimed at grant proposal writing, paper presentations at professional conferences and publishing scholarly work, actively engage in research and publications.
  • Engage in student recruitment, assist with student advisement /student registration, take on committee assignments at all levels of the University, and provide services to the community and the profession.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Biology or related biological fields.
  • Minimum of three-years full-time college teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use technology in teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrated innovation in teaching large biology classes.
  • Demonstrated experience with science teaching pedagogy, curriculum and/or program development.
  • Demonstrate experience with assessment requirements for core curriculum biology courses according to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC) accreditation standards.
  • Record of institutional program development and implementation.
  • Ability to conduct programmatic assessments and contribute to institutional effectiveness.
  • Ability to advise pre-optometry, pre-dental, pre-health and pre-medical students.
  • Record of excellent writing and communication skills as demonstrated through conference participation, and workshop instruction.
  • Record of establishing Memorandum of Understanding with partnering institutions.
  • Record of establishing alliances to ensured internship opportunities.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness working in a collaborative, team setting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Post-doctoral research experience.
  • Three or more years of undergraduate teaching experience.
  • Three or more years of experience in academic or career advising.
  • Two or more years of experience in creating budgets and writing/managing grants.
  • A proven record or propensity to obtain external funding to support an active research program.
  • Record of scholarship and publication in higher tier journals appropriate to the applicants' field of study.
