About the position

The Department of Art, Design and Game Development at Long Island University is seeking a full-time, non-tenure track Assistant Professor of Digital Game Design and Development. This position is set to begin on September 1, 2024, and the successful candidate will play a crucial role in the undergraduate program, teaching a variety of required courses including Game Development 1 through 3, Visual Design for Games, Senior Game Project, and Topics in Game Design. The faculty member will also be responsible for developing innovative elective classes, fostering internship opportunities within the New York area, and collaborating with faculty from Computer Science and Digital Art and Design to ensure a rigorous curriculum is maintained. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the Assistant Professor will engage in service on faculty committees, prepare outcomes assessment reports, and contribute to strategic planning documents. The role also involves planning events for current and prospective students, updating curriculum and technology as needed, and representing the program at open house and recruitment events. The ideal candidate will be an innovator and leader in the field of game development, with a strong interest in program development and student recruitment.

Responsibilities

  • Teach required courses in the undergraduate program, including Game Development 1 through 3, Visual Design for Games, Senior Game Project, and Topics in Game Design.
  • Develop innovative elective classes for the program.
  • Cultivate internship opportunities in the New York area for students.
  • Collaborate with Computer Science faculty and Digital Art and Design faculty to maintain a rigorous curriculum.
  • Serve on faculty committees and prepare outcomes assessment reports and strategic planning documents.
  • Plan events for current and prospective students.
  • Plan curriculum and technology updates as needed.
  • Represent the program in open house events and recruitment events.

Requirements

  • MFA or doctorate (or equivalent professional experience) in game design and/or game programming-related fields such as game design, computer science, computer programming, and/or interactive design.
  • Demonstrated consistent scholarly/creative activity with national/international recognition in game development.
  • Active experience with the game industry is preferred.
  • 3 or more years of experience practicing game development in Unity production techniques.
  • Expertise in development for PC, web, and mobile devices using Unity.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as C#.
  • Experience with other standard game technologies including the Unreal engine and Javascript gaming libraries.
  • Experience in Audio & Visual Design for Games.
  • University-level teaching experience is expected.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with other gaming engines and platforms for Unity development, such as virtual reality or augmented reality.
  • Experience developing analog games.
  • Strong administrative skills and a collaborative style.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technologists, artists, and designers on team projects.
