About the position

The Assistant Professor of Digital Journalism at SUNY Old Westbury is a full-time, permanent position aimed at educating students in various aspects of digital journalism. The role involves teaching foundational and advanced courses, mentoring students, and contributing to the department's commitment to social justice through journalism. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in digital media production and a commitment to addressing issues related to diversity and inclusion in their teaching and professional work.

Responsibilities

  • Teach foundation courses such as Multimedia Journalism and Writing for Media, as well as advanced courses in areas of expertise.
  • Provide consistent, high-quality teaching and ongoing successful journalistic or creative output.
  • Advise students and support their academic and professional development.
  • Mentor students in creating multiplatform portfolios and securing internships in journalism/media.
  • Support student media outlets and engage in service to the department and college.

Requirements

  • A Master's in Journalism, MFA, or terminal degree in media or a related field.
  • Expertise in multiplatform nonfiction media production, investigative reporting, visual journalism, data/sensor journalism, immersive storytelling, broadcast, community and/or social justice journalism, public relations, or strategic communications.
  • Professional experience in a contemporary newsroom or digital media environment.
  • Strong foundation in journalistic ethics and best practices.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience teaching at the college level.
  • Experience teaching or mentoring an ethnically diverse, working student population.
  • A record of professional media production or journalistic work in a contemporary and/or digital nonfiction media environment.
  • Journalistic experience addressing issues of gender, race/ethnicity, immigration, disability, LGBTQIA+, class, or other historically underrepresented communities.
  • Experience in student or community media.
