About the position

The Assistant Professor, Director of Athletic Bands at San Jose State University will lead the Spartan Marching Band and oversee all Spartan Pep Band activities. This role involves effective recruitment, teaching, administration, and leadership within a nationally recognized university band program. The position also includes conducting the Symphonic Band and teaching various music education courses, contributing to a vibrant and diverse educational environment.

Responsibilities

• Serve as Director of the San José State University Spartan Marching Band.
• Direct all Spartan Pep Band activities.
• Conduct the Symphonic Band and teach marching band techniques.
• Participate in shared governance through committee assignments.
• Organize classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
• Demonstrate awareness of diverse student needs through inclusive teaching strategies.

Requirements

• Earned doctorate in music or equivalent experience (Master of Music with distinguished record of performance, conducting, teaching, and scholarly activities).
• Successful experience in leading marching and pep bands.
• Awareness and sensitivity to the educational goals of a diverse student population.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience teaching at the middle/high school level.
• Experience working with collegiate athletic bands.
