About the position

The Assistant Professor, Director of Athletic Bands at San Jose State University will lead the Spartan Marching Band and oversee all Spartan Pep Band activities. This role involves effective recruitment, teaching, administration, and leadership to maintain a prominent university band program. The position also includes additional teaching responsibilities in music education and conducting, contributing to a vibrant and successful athletic band program.

Responsibilities

• Serve as Director of the San Jose State University 'Spartan Marching Band'.
• Direct all Spartan Pep Band activities.
• Conduct the Symphonic Band and instruct in marching band techniques.
• Teach other courses in music education, instrumental conducting, and/or applied instruction.
• Participate in shared governance through committee service and other assignments.
• Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
• Demonstrate awareness and experience in understanding the diverse needs of the student population.

Requirements

• An earned doctorate in music or a Master of Music with a distinguished record of professional performance, conducting, teaching, and creative and scholarly activities.
• Successful experience in leading marching and pep bands.
• Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience teaching at the middle/high school level.
• Experience working with collegiate athletic bands.
