About the position

The Department of Plants, Soils, and Climate at Utah State University is seeking a dynamic Assistant Professor for a tenure-track faculty position focused primarily on teaching and applied research in soil science. The role emphasizes the study of Western calcareous soils and aims to bridge fundamental soil science with applied and interdisciplinary fields to address contemporary environmental and agricultural challenges. The successful candidate will develop impactful teaching programs and conduct research that aligns with regional priorities, contributing to the department's long-standing excellence in soil science education.

Responsibilities

• Develop and teach a fundamental undergraduate course in soil science (PSC 3000).
• Teach a course in urban soil management and reclamation (PSC 4500).
• Create and deliver a third course related to their area of expertise.
• Pursue applied research in soil science that addresses regional priorities.
• Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
• Compete for external funding to support research and teaching programs.
• Mentor graduate and undergraduate students, including advising the Utah Soils Team.
• Collaborate with scientists across various departments and agencies.
• Contribute to departmental, college, and university service.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in soil science or a related discipline.
• Experience with classroom teaching in higher education.
• Experience in soil science-related research.
• Record of publication in peer-reviewed academic journals.
• Ability to pursue and obtain competitive funding.

Nice-to-haves

• Expertise in arid/semi-arid soils, urban soils, biogeochemistry, and/or applied soil chemistry.
• Demonstrated excellence in communication skills across diverse disciplines.
• Evidence of effective mentoring of students and staff.
• Experience with both in-person and online teaching delivery.
