About the position

The Assistant Professor in Fashion and Costume History at Marist College is a tenure-track position beginning in Fall 2025. The role primarily involves teaching undergraduate courses related to Fashion Design and Merchandising, as well as contributing to the Liberal Arts core curriculum. The successful candidate will possess a strong analytical and historical understanding of fashion and costume history, with the ability to connect historical context to modern industry practices. Additionally, the position includes managing the Fashion archive collection and fostering an inclusive learning environment that respects diverse perspectives.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate courses in Fashion and Costume History, including ART 281 and FASH 381, and potentially first-year seminars and honors courses.
  • Oversee the Fashion Archive collection, managing all related details.
  • Meet with students outside of class for additional instruction as needed.
  • Engage in service duties such as committee service, curriculum development, admissions, and community outreach.
  • Conduct academic advising for students.
  • Engage in research within the candidate's area of expertise.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Fashion or Costume History or a related discipline by the time of appointment.
  • At least two years of teaching experience in Fashion and Costume History at the undergraduate level.
  • A portfolio demonstrating expertise in the subject matter.
  • Evidence of diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching.

Nice-to-haves

  • Two or more years of relevant teaching experience in a pre-professional fashion program.
  • Demonstrated archival and curatorial garment experience.
  • Interest in interdepartmental and interdisciplinary collaboration.
