About the position

The NAU Kitt School of Music is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Assistant Professor of Music Education to coordinate the undergraduate music education program. This full-time, tenure-track position involves teaching undergraduate courses, conducting research in music education, and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds. The successful candidate will contribute to the growth of the music education field and foster student development through effective teaching and engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate music education courses, such as elementary methods or secondary choral methods, contingent on candidate expertise.
  • Conduct music education research or creative activities that contribute to contemporary dialogs in music teaching and learning.
  • Coordinate the Bachelor of Music Education degree.
  • Supervise student teachers and practicum students.
  • Build and maintain productive relations with Arizona music educators, fine arts coordinators, and school principals.
  • Committee and service assignments consistent with all faculty appointments.

Requirements

  • PhD, EdD, or DME in music education or related field (ABD accepted with degree completion by August 18, 2025).
  • Possession of a current or previous K-12 state teaching license.
  • 3 or more years of experience as a K-12 music teacher.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience teaching elementary general music and/or secondary choral/vocal music.
  • Demonstrated success in teaching pre-service music educators at the university/collegiate level.
  • Background/engagement with two or more musical traditions.
  • Demonstrated excellence in research and/or creative activity in the field of music education.
  • Demonstrated success in and/or commitment to inclusive excellence in music teaching/research.
