About the position

The Assistant Professor of Music at Grand Rapids Community College is a tenure-track position responsible for teaching music courses, particularly in Music Theory, and providing private lessons. The role emphasizes innovative teaching strategies, engagement with diverse student populations, and collaboration within the Music Program. Faculty members are expected to contribute to the development of students and the program while maintaining high standards of communication and professionalism.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in the required Music Theory sequence for music majors.
  • Teach private lessons in the candidate's primary applied area of study.
  • Support the development and implementation of teaching techniques that employ technology and innovative practices.
  • Recruit students from local secondary schools and the GRCC campus community for choral and vocal music participation.
  • Assist the Music Program Director in evaluating and revising existing courses and creating new courses.
  • Advise students on academic programs and careers related to music.
  • Engage in professional development and continuous improvement in college teaching and music.
  • Participate fully in Music Program activities, including meetings and committee memberships.
  • Contribute to the development of students and the community through involvement in professional organizations and program recitals.
  • Maintain accurate course records and submit related reports as requested.
  • Effectively assess student performance and create a safe and inclusive learning environment.

Requirements

  • Masters of Music in Music Theory required.
  • A minimum of 2 years teaching experience in Music Theory at the college or university level required.
  • Excellent Music Theory pedagogical skills.
  • Functional piano skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative and problem-solving abilities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) or PhD in Music Theory preferred.
  • Community College Teaching Experience preferred.
  • Experience working with adults from diverse backgrounds and varying academic skills preferred.
  • Participation in professional development activities to remain current in the field.
  • Ability to teach Aural Skills, Music Software Essentials, Music Technology, Applied Music, Studio Class.
