About the position

The Assistant Professor of Nursing position at Connecticut State Community College is a full-time, tenure-track role that requires the incumbent to prepare and teach college-approved courses in accordance with established course descriptions and schedules. This includes developing syllabi, reading lists, and ensuring that each course is kept complete and up to date. The Assistant Professor will engage with various constituencies, including students, faculty, and external agencies, to foster a collaborative educational environment. The role also involves performing departmental responsibilities such as selecting texts and teaching resources, as well as fulfilling other teaching-related duties as outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The Assistant Professor is expected to teach thirty (30) credit hours per academic year, covering a range of courses within the nursing discipline. Responsibilities extend beyond teaching to include evaluating and assessing student learning, providing academic advising, planning program-related events, assisting with program reviews, developing curriculum, and periodically evaluating teaching materials. The teaching schedule may include both day and evening classes, and course delivery may be conducted through lectures, hybrid formats, or online systems. In addition to teaching duties, the incumbent is required to attend and participate in convocation and commencement ceremonies, serve on assigned committees and task forces, and attend various professional meetings. This may involve evening or weekend commitments. The position emphasizes the importance of working effectively with a diverse population and utilizing culturally responsive pedagogical techniques. Strong communication skills and proficiency in information technology, particularly Microsoft Office applications, are essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and teach college-approved courses in accordance with approved course descriptions and class schedules.
  • Develop syllabi and reading lists for courses taught.
  • Respond to and work with multiple constituencies, including students, peers, and external agencies.
  • Perform divisional departmental responsibilities in the selection of texts and related teaching resources.
  • Evaluate and assess student learning.
  • Provide student support and academic advising.
  • Plan and execute program-related events.
  • Assist with program reviews and curriculum development.
  • Attend workshops and conferences to maintain currency in the profession and field.
  • Carry out essential duties of attendance and participation at convocation and commencement ceremonies.
  • Serve on assigned committees and task forces.
  • Attend and participate in committee, staff, informational, and professional meetings.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Nursing or related field.
  • Eligibility for or current unencumbered CT RN licensure required.
  • Four (4) years' college teaching experience (96+ credits) or two (2) years' college teaching experience with four (4) or more years of clinical nursing experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • 48+ credits after two (2) years of teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching in simulation/nursing skills lab and acute care setting.
  • Experience in facilitating high-fidelity simulation.
  • Experience teaching Medical-Surgical Nursing and/or Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing.
  • Familiarity with the community college experience as a student, faculty, or staff.
  • Experience incorporating technology to enhance the learning environment, e.g., Blackboard, online instruction or other modalities/software.
