About the position

The Department of Chemistry and Forensic Science at Savannah State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty appointment as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry, beginning in Fall 2025. The successful candidate will teach 12 semester hours of chemistry courses. Faculty responsibilities include delivering online courses, contributing to program and curriculum development, providing academic mentoring, participating in scholarly activities, promoting student success, and engaging in institutional service. The candidate is also expected to establish an active research program that secures external funding. Areas of interest include biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences, chemical biology, with a focus on undergraduate student involvement. Faculty may be asked to perform tasks not specifically described in this job posting. The department offers a Chemistry program that includes an ACS-certified Bachelor of Science and a Pre-Med chemistry track. It has established strong collaborative relationships with academic institutions, industry, and federal government agencies. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments, including real-time PCR, Bio-Rad and Invitrogen imaging systems, Zeiss confocal microscope, thermocyclers, BioTek microplate readers, CD, HPLC, GC-MS, LC-MS, UV-Vis, NMR, FT-IR, Raman, Gel Permeation Chromatography, Thermogravimetric analyzer, and more. Additionally, a virtual reality technology center is utilized for teaching chemistry and forensic science courses. The position will remain open until filled.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching 12 semester hours of chemistry courses
  • Participating in chemistry curriculum development
  • Engaging in online course delivery
  • Engaging in student success activities, including building and enhancing existing chemistry internship partnerships with academic institutions, government agencies, and industrial partners
  • Establishing an active research program in biomedical, pharmaceutical, chemical biology, and/or AI applications in chemistry that involves undergraduate students
  • Writing grant applications to secure extramural and competitive funding
  • Performing program assessments as assigned
  • Providing mentoring to program students and student organizations
  • Participating in university, college, and departmental open houses, recruitment, and outreach activities

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in chemistry or a closely related field from an accredited institution. The Ph.D. must be conferred by the commencement date of employment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ph.D. with expertise in biomedical or pharmaceutical research
  • Postdoctoral training and/or teaching experience
  • Research interests in biomedical and/or pharmaceutical sciences, chemical biology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) application in the biomedical and pharmaceutical studies
