About the position

The Assistant Professor of Coastal Engineering at Old Dominion University is a tenure-track position aimed at enhancing research and educational programs in the field of Coastal Engineering. The role focuses on addressing global challenges related to sea level rise and coastal resilience, particularly in the Hampton Roads area, which is significantly affected by these issues. The professor will be responsible for establishing a funded research program, teaching courses, advising students, and collaborating with various partners to promote interdisciplinary research and education.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on climate-adaptive coastal structures.
  • Design coastal and near-coast structures.
  • Analyze interactions between structures and near-shore processes.
  • Estimate the life of structures in coastal environments.
  • Address engineering challenges specific to coastal settings.
  • Develop and teach courses in Civil Engineering.
  • Advise students on academic and career paths.
  • Serve on departmental and university committees.
  • Promote student success, recruitment, and retention.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a related Engineering discipline by July 25, 2025.
  • Ability to develop and teach graduate and undergraduate courses in Civil Engineering.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or a plan to obtain one soon.
  • Experience in teaching Coastal Engineering courses.
  • Ability to secure and sustain sponsored research funding.
  • Track record of developing interdisciplinary research collaborations.
