About the position

The Purdue University Northwest Department of Communication and Creative Arts is seeking applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Communication with a specialization in Broadcasting and Journalism. This position is designed for candidates who possess a strong record in research or professional practice, pedagogy, and teaching experience in the fields of broadcasting and journalism. The ideal candidate will have documented experience in TV broadcasting production, which is essential for the role. The primary responsibility of this position will be to teach classes in broadcasting and journalism, including the development and production of 'The Roundtable Perspective,' a student-produced public access talk show that airs weekly on Lakeshore Public Media (PBS). Additionally, the successful candidate will provide both traditional and innovative support for 'The Pioneer,' PNW's monthly student-produced newspaper. This role requires a generalist approach to Communication, recognizing it as a multifaceted and interdisciplinary subject. Candidates should demonstrate knowledge in areas such as Visual Communication Design, Strategic Communication, and Public Advocacy. The position entails a 3-3 course load, and the incumbent is expected to teach using professional tools while demonstrating high-level proficiency and/or professional experience in various areas, including TV broadcasting, journalism, reporting, media production, content creation, video editing, and publication design. Furthermore, there is an expectation of service engagement at the department, college, and university levels. The successful candidate will also be an active scholar-practitioner, contributing to nationally recognized research within their field.

Responsibilities

  • Teach classes in broadcasting and journalism with a focus on practical and theoretical aspects.

Requirements

  • Possess a terminal degree in the field of study (PhD, MA, MFA).
  • Significant professional experience (minimum of 7 years) may substitute for academic qualifications for the right candidate.
  • Evidence of teaching experience at the college level.
  • Demonstrated understanding of traditional journalism and research practices.
  • Experience with TV broadcasting and/or media production.
  • Documented expertise in manipulating video, text, and imagery.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in Visual Communication Design.
  • Knowledge of Strategic Communication and Public Advocacy.
