About the position

Austin Peay State University is seeking a full-time Assistant Professor of Music to serve as the Associate Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands. This tenure-track position involves overseeing the Athletic Band program, conducting various ensembles, and teaching music courses. The role is integral to the Department of Music, which is known for its vibrant presence in the community and offers a range of music degrees. The successful candidate will begin on August 1, 2025, and will be responsible for directing the Athletic Band program, conducting the Symphonic Band, and engaging in recruitment and community outreach.

Responsibilities

  • Direct all aspects of the APSU Athletic Band program.
  • Schedule, supervise, and conduct rehearsals and performances for all athletic band activities.
  • Supervise all administrative aspects of athletic bands including financial management and facilities reservations.
  • Demonstrate ability to compose music arrangements and visual design.
  • Identify, hire, and supervise supplemental instructors and music designers for the Marching Band.
  • Supervise student employees assigned to athletic bands.
  • Schedule, facilitate, and teach Fall pre-semester rehearsals.
  • Facilitate annual Athletic Band events including high school competitions and alumni events.
  • Maintain, build, and improve all aspects of the athletic band program.
  • Direct the APSU Symphonic Band in all rehearsals and performances.
  • Teach courses suitable to specialization, including Marching Band Techniques and music theory.
  • Serve as Associate Director of the annual Governors Honor Festival.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Bands on aspects of all band activities.
  • Actively recruit for the University and the Music Department.
  • Facilitate academic advising for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Collaborate with other areas in the Music Department and with area musicians.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with high school band directors and students.
  • Engage in professional, scholarly creative, and service activities.
  • Participate in relevant professional organizations.
  • Serve on faculty committees.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in music required.
  • Must have earned one degree in Music Education (Bachelor's or Master's).
  • Demonstrated experience in athletic bands.
  • Demonstrated experience as a concert band conductor.

Nice-to-haves

  • Earned doctorate in Conducting or Music Education.
  • Significant athletic band and/or drum corps experience.
  • Minimum three years of full-time teaching experience at the K-12 level.
  • Collegiate teaching experience.
  • Strong record of recruiting, professional activity, and research activities.
