About the position

The Assistant Professor of Music - Director of New Music and Creative Innovation at Pacific Lutheran University is a tenure-track position focused on leading the undergraduate Composition program. The role emphasizes the development of new music across various media, fostering an inclusive learning environment, and contributing to the cultural richness of the Seattle-Tacoma area. The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional compositional skills and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in music education.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and direction for the undergraduate Composition program at PLU.
  • Teach coursework in composition, arranging, film/video game scoring, digital audio production, and other music-related subjects.
  • Assume a position of leadership and high visibility in new music in the state and region.
  • Actively recruit top high school students and participate in SMTD recruiting activities.
  • Participate in faculty activities and relevant service to the university.
  • Other duties as assigned based upon the appointee's strengths and department needs.

Requirements

  • Terminal degree (DMA or PhD) in Composition or related area, or ABD with completion by September 1, 2025.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with, teach, and mentor diverse groups and/or diverse students.
  • Knowledge of a diverse, broad repertoire, and current research and techniques in composition, notation, and digital audio production.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior teaching experience at the college level.
  • Piano proficiency.
