About the position

The University of California, Davis is seeking an Assistant Professor of Teaching in Technical Direction for the Department of Theatre and Dance. This full-time position, beginning July 1, 2025, focuses on arts education, technical direction, and mentoring students in a collaborative environment. The role includes overseeing technical aspects of productions, classroom instruction, and maintaining high standards in a safe work environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in theatre production and a commitment to diversity and inclusion in education.

Responsibilities

• Oversee all technical aspects of theatre and dance productions.
• Manage the scenic shop and supervise students and part-time staff.
• Train students in technical theatre areas.
• Serve as a mentor/advisor for student creative research, including honors and capstone projects.
• Deliver classroom instruction in technical production and stagecraft.
• Balance teaching load with production responsibilities, typically 3 or 4 classroom instruction assignments along with production duties.

Requirements

• MFA and/or Ph.D. in theatre or technical theatre (other degrees may be considered).
• 5 years of experience in technical direction in university or professional theatre production.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain a safe work environment.
• Experience with student supervision and instruction.
• Classroom teaching experience in technical production and stagecraft.
