About the position

The School of Theatre, Television, and Film at San Diego State University is seeking a full-time Assistant Professor specializing in Production Design for Film & Television. This role is essential for delivering the curriculum for the Television, Film, and New Media and Design and Technology programs. The position involves teaching production design courses, mentoring students, and collaborating on student-led projects, while also contributing to the development of the curriculum and promoting the School's programs.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in production design at lower division, upper division, and graduate levels.
  • Collaborate with staff and graduate assistants on student-led television and film-related design projects.
  • Mentor and advise students in production design, supporting their creative and professional growth.
  • Provide guidance on industry-standard design software and tools.
  • Revise and develop the production design curriculum to align with industry changes.
  • Contribute to graduate and undergraduate portfolio, qualifier, and capstone reviews.
  • Participate in recruitment activities for production design students.
  • Promote the School on local and national levels.
  • Provide service to the university and professional community.

Requirements

  • Terminal degree in production design, art direction, film production, scenic design, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in film and/or television production design.
  • Commitment to cultivating an inclusive environment and recruiting underrepresented populations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Demonstrated professional experience in design within the entertainment industry.
  • Membership in a professional union (such as IATSE or United Scenic Artists, USA829).
  • Experience teaching at the college or university level.
  • Experience or commitment to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard software and design tools.
  • Knowledge of art, architecture, or decor history.
  • Experience with new technology such as virtual production, AI, or immersive media.
