About the position

The University of Memphis is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Public History to join the Department of History, pending final funding approval. This position is set to begin in August 2025 and is aimed at candidates who specialize in various practices of public history. The role involves teaching responsibilities, including survey-level courses and upper-level courses, while also engaging with local institutions in Memphis.

Responsibilities

  • Teach two courses per semester, including at least one survey-level course that meets the General Education requirement in History.
  • Offer upper-level courses and graduate seminars focused on public history practices.
  • Develop connections with Memphis-area institutions.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in History or a related discipline required upon appointment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Specialization in archival work, cultural resources management, digital history, film and media production, historic preservation, local history, museum exhibition and curation, oral history, or site interpretation.
