About the position

The Assistant Professor position in Special Education at Eastern Michigan University is a tenure-track role aimed at fostering educational leadership through teaching, research, and community engagement. The successful candidate will contribute to the department's mission of promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in education, while also engaging in scholarly activities and curriculum development that supports inclusive excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Teach in two or more areas of the department programs/majors
  • Provide academic and scholarly research advising to students
  • Engage in research and scholarly activities appropriate to an R2 institution
  • Provide service to department, college, and university committees, and impact local and global communities
  • Create and co-construct transformative curriculum and enact pedagogy to reflect and support inclusive excellence
  • Meet all contractual obligations for tenure-track faculty

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in Special Education or related field, completed by date of appointment from an accredited institution
  • Prior special education teaching experience in a P-12 school
  • Demonstrated commitment to and achievement in diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in higher education settings
  • An emergent/active community-engaged scholarly agenda and accomplishments related to the appointment
  • Experience in and/or knowledge about preparing special education teachers in culturally-responsive and -sustaining pedagogy
  • Experience and versatility in inclusive pedagogy

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in cross-categorical special education teaching and scholarship
  • Experience with early childhood special education
  • Previous higher education teaching experience
  • Experience acquiring or pursuing external research funding
