About the position

The Assistant Public Information Officer is responsible for managing a variety of governmental topics and civic activities for Bexar County. This role involves coordinating events, managing communications, and providing executive-level administrative support. The position requires building relationships with community members and stakeholders, developing communication plans, and ensuring effective dissemination of information.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain relationships with community members, key stakeholders, and partner organizations through community outreach.
  • Develop and execute internal and external communication plans for various departments, programs, and initiatives.
  • Coordinate and lead civic communication projects, programs, and engagements within a given timeframe.
  • Collaborate with offices and departments on communication, public relations, media, and social relations.
  • Plan and manage events from start to finish, including logistics management and audience development.
  • Provide exceptional communication service by anticipating needs and proactively addressing items.
  • Provide pre and post-event reporting and follow-up campaigns for all assigned projects and civic engagements.
  • Assist in content development and provide feedback on proposed events, projects, and programs.
  • Collaborate with internal and external teams to determine events marketing, strategy, and development.
  • Provide on-site support for all events, programs, and engagements.
  • Contribute to print publications, advertising, video, presentations, and coordinate with all offices and departments.
  • Coordinate Open Records requests with the Public Information Officer and the District Attorney.
  • Perform executive level administrative support as required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations, Communication, Journalism, Public Administration or related field.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience in public relations, public affairs, media relations, or planning.
  • Considerable knowledge and experience in public information, social media, and implementation of complex communication plans and projects for a large organization.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and coordinate representatives from various departments.
  • Strong communication skills, including experience producing content for various types of media.
  • Skill in communicating effectively with diverse groups of individuals utilizing tact and diplomacy.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of Emergency management standards (NIMS certification) or commitment to take training within 60 days of hire.
  • Experience in emergency response communications as part of local, state, or federal agencies.
