About the position

The Assistant Publisher, Journals at OUP plays a crucial role in supporting the management and development of a portfolio of journal titles. This position involves collaborating with publishers and editors to enhance content quality and market share, while also engaging in data analysis and relationship building. Responsibilities

  • Support Publishers in managing and developing their portfolio of titles.
  • Collaborate with Publishers and Editors to publish high-quality content to increase market share of articles.
  • Suggest and negotiate contractual terms with Societies and/or Editors that align with OUP's strategic priorities.
  • Assist in managing editorial performance for a portfolio of titles according to best practices.
  • Create and drive editorial development plans with Publishers for their titles, providing relevant data for decision making.
  • Maximize profitability of titles by managing costs and risk mitigation.
  • Respond to external queries and requests from editors and/or societies.
  • Support list management to achieve journal and divisional targets.
  • Liaise with internal departments to resolve issues raised by authors and journal editors.
  • Coordinate the production of relevant reports for the list manager and clients.
  • Prepare regular publishing update reports for Society partner journals.
  • Conduct data analysis for strategic/editorial development of journals.
  • Work collaboratively with other functional groups to deliver excellent service.
  • Maintain journals contracts repository and monitor adherence to contractual terms.
  • Organize meetings and manage logistics for events and travel arrangements.
  • Provide general support for renewals, journal bids, launches, and acquisitions.
  • Collaborate with global Journals departments to enhance communications.
  • Participate in departmental projects and assist in training new Publishing Assistants.

Requirements

  • Good organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to learn new tasks and systems quickly.
  • Strong team spirit and collaborative work ethic.
  • Self-discipline to manage and balance priorities under time pressure.
  • Attention to detail and strong numeracy skills.
  • Excellent spoken and written English with persuasive communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products, especially Excel.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau preferred.
  • At least one year of publishing or transferable professional experience.
  • Basic understanding of academic publishing, including editorial and production processes.
