About the position

The Spanish Colonial Research Center (SCRC) is seeking a motivated and highly engaged student employee to assist with challenging archival work. This position involves processing collections related to the Center's existing Spanish Colonial and Mexican Territorial archival materials. The role is designed for students who are interested in gaining hands-on experience in archival research and documentation. The student assistant will work under direct supervision and will be part of a collaborative team environment with SCRC staff. The position offers a flexible schedule of 10 hours per week, with the potential to increase to 20 hours when classes are not in session. This is an excellent opportunity for students to develop their skills in archival processing and contribute to important historical research.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble a finding aid/ContentDM for unprocessed collections via Microsoft Excel
  • Scan documents as appropriate to digitize and store for later posting to an online collection
  • Communicate regularly with supervisor on progress and materials of note
  • Perform additional office duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High fluency in written Spanish
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with reading and translating Spanish archival documents
  • Interest in academic research on the Old Spanish Trail or the Spanish Colonial/Mexican Territorial periods
