About the position

The Assistant Sports Editor at the Cincinnati Enquirer will play a crucial role in leading the sports reporting team, focusing on audience growth and engagement through effective coverage of local sports. This position requires a hands-on approach to editing and supervising reporters, ensuring high-quality content that resonates with the audience. The ideal candidate will be adept at using audience insights to inform coverage decisions and will have a strong background in digital journalism, including SEO and multimedia content optimization.

Responsibilities

• Directly supervise and coach a team of reporters.
• Edit content to Cincinnati Enquirer standards.
• Use metrics to inform story choices and shape coverage strategies.
• Work with digital production team to ensure optimal engagement on stories.
• Identify opportunities for enterprise/investigative journalism.
• Ensure coverage plans are developed and executed for daily coverage as well as tentpole events.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Management experience.
• Experience making coverage decisions based on audience insights.
• Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and minimum liability insurance required by state law.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience editing on deadline and covering sports at all levels.
• Experience with audience-insight metrics, mobile engagement, and enterprise reporting.
• Experience in digital headline writing/SEO and multimedia content optimization.
