About the position

The Assistant Store Leader is responsible for overseeing the operations of all departments within the store, sharing responsibility for store performance in various areas including human resources, scheduling, security, and safety. This role involves assisting the store manager in leading teams, enhancing customer service, and achieving sales and profit goals while demonstrating the company's core values of respect, honesty, integrity, diversity, inclusion, and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Learn the operations of all departments and the duties of store management.
  • Share responsibility for store performance in all areas of operation and human resources.
  • Perform scheduling, security, maintenance, safety, sanitation, ordering, administration, and human resource-related duties.
  • Assist the store manager and associates in achieving a favorable customer shopping experience.
  • Develop associate interest in customer service to enhance Kroger's reputation.
  • Lead teams in planning, implementing, and executing merchandising and operating initiatives.
  • Develop action plans and communications to associates based on Associate Insight survey results.
  • Identify store opportunities and develop timely solutions with department heads and associates.
  • Model and demand the highest level of customer service and resolve associate/customer issues.
  • Manage total store operations in the store manager's absence.
  • Achieve and exceed sales, wage budgets, and profit budgets, as well as other targeted goals.
  • Drive sales by working with department managers to maximize sales and profits.
  • Assist in regular store-level financial performance discussions with associates.
  • Analyze and respond to the competitive landscape within the district/division.
  • Demonstrate inclusionary leadership and expect inclusive behavior from associates.
  • Promote strong relationships with local community organizations.
  • Assist in building relationships with union representatives if applicable.
  • Communicate necessary information to associates to help them carry out their duties effectively.
  • Serve as a liaison to store/district managers on the effectiveness of division plans.
  • Assist in staffing, reducing turnover, and increasing retention.
  • Provide timely performance feedback to department heads and associates.
  • Assist with labor management and supply costs to meet targets.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and enterprise policies.
  • Supervise and coach direct reports on their performance.

Requirements

  • Minimum high school diploma or GED.
  • 1 year of experience as a department manager, service manager, or equivalent experience.
  • Approval from store manager, district manager, or direct manager.

Nice-to-haves

  • Retail management experience and knowledge of all aspects of store operations.
  • Staff supervisory experience.
