About the position

As an Assistant Store Manager (ASM) at Barnes & Noble, you will play a crucial role in enhancing the customer experience and ensuring the store operates smoothly. You will work closely with the Store Manager (SM) to maintain the store's presentation and service standards, while also focusing on the development of the bookselling team. Your leadership will drive sales and profit by leveraging resources effectively and fostering a collaborative environment among booksellers who are passionate about books.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure consistent, friendly and informed service to customers by setting an example and training the store team.
  • Ensure a vibrant bookstore through the flawless execution of bookstore basics.
  • Assess the store from the customer's perspective and seek improvements in collaboration with the SM.
  • Model handselling skills to drive successful campaigns and establish book prowess.
  • Develop the bookselling team through engagement and coaching, providing feedback on individual strengths.
  • Ensure the achievement of sales goals and operational excellence to maximize efficiency and minimize loss.
  • Ensure compliance with company standards regarding safety and store operations.
  • Communicate respectfully and urgently with the store team on key issues, fostering a positive culture.
  • Collaborate with other locations for overall improvement.
  • Perform physical activities on the selling floor, including standing, bending, lifting, and climbing.
  • Open and close the store, ensuring safety for employees and customers.

Requirements

  • Solid bookselling knowledge across various genres and a strong understanding of the book industry.
  • Enthusiasm for books reflected in excellent service standards for the local community.
  • Experience in managing and developing employees at all levels.
  • Effective organization, planning, and prioritization of workload.
  • Ability to delegate and work through others.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Experience building collaborative and productive working relationships.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in retail management or a similar role.
