The Assistant Store Manager (ASM) at Barnes & Noble plays a crucial role in enhancing the customer experience and ensuring the store operates smoothly. The ASM is responsible for leading by example, providing excellent customer service, and fostering a positive environment for both customers and employees.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure consistent, friendly, and informed service to customers by setting an example and training the store team.
  • Maintain a vibrant bookstore through the flawless execution of bookstore basics.
  • Assess the store from the customer's perspective and seek improvements in collaboration with the Store Manager.
  • Model handselling skills to drive successful campaigns and sales.
  • Develop the bookselling team through engagement, coaching, and feedback.
  • Achieve sales goals and deliver operational excellence to maximize efficiency and minimize loss.
  • Ensure compliance with company standards regarding safety and store operations.
  • Communicate key issues and messages respectfully and urgently to the store team.
  • Collaborate with other locations for overall improvement.
  • Perform physical activities on the selling floor, including standing, bending, lifting, and climbing.
  • Open and close the store, ensuring safety for employees and customers.

Requirements

  • Solid bookselling knowledge across various genres and a strong understanding of the book industry.
  • Enthusiasm for books and excellent service standards for the local community.
  • Experience in managing and developing employees at all levels.
  • Effective organization, planning, and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to delegate and work through others.
  • Strong communication skills, both effective and comfortable.
  • Experience in building collaborative and productive working relationships.
  • Ability to deliver honest and constructive feedback.

  • Experience in retail management or a similar role.
