About the position
The Assistant Store Manager (ASM) at Barnes & Noble plays a crucial role in enhancing the customer experience and ensuring the store operates smoothly. This position involves collaborating closely with the Store Manager to maintain the store's presentation and service standards, while also focusing on team development and sales performance. The ASM is responsible for leading by example, providing excellent customer service, and fostering a positive environment for both customers and employees.
Responsibilities
- Ensure consistent, friendly, and informed service to customers by setting an example and training the store team.
- Maintain a vibrant bookstore through the flawless execution of bookstore basics.
- Assess the store from the customer's perspective and seek improvements in collaboration with the Store Manager.
- Model handselling skills to drive successful campaigns and sales.
- Develop the bookselling team through engagement, coaching, and feedback.
- Achieve sales goals and deliver operational excellence to maximize efficiency and minimize loss.
- Ensure compliance with company standards regarding safety and store operations.
- Communicate key issues and messages respectfully and urgently to the store team.
- Collaborate with other locations for overall improvement.
- Perform physical activities on the selling floor, including standing, bending, lifting, and climbing.
- Open and close the store, ensuring safety for employees and customers.
Requirements
- Solid bookselling knowledge across various genres and a strong understanding of the book industry.
- Enthusiasm for books and excellent service standards for the local community.
- Experience in managing and developing employees at all levels.
- Effective organization, planning, and prioritization skills.
- Ability to delegate and work through others.
- Strong communication skills, both effective and comfortable.
- Experience in building collaborative and productive working relationships.
- Ability to deliver honest and constructive feedback.
