The Assistant Teacher for Head Start plays a crucial role in the care, supervision, and safety of children at the center. This position involves assisting staff in planning and implementing an age-appropriate curriculum that meets the developmental needs of children. The Assistant Teacher is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment in both the classroom and playground. A key aspect of this role is to demonstrate compassion and understanding towards the diverse needs of children and families, particularly those from economically and culturally varied backgrounds. In addition to direct care responsibilities, the Assistant Teacher must learn, implement, and adhere to all program policies and procedures. This includes encouraging self-esteem and independence in children, addressing their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs. Health, safety, and nutritional education must be integrated into the overall curriculum planning to ensure a holistic approach to child development. Furthermore, the Assistant Teacher will take on program operations in the absence of the Head Teacher, ensuring continuity and quality of care. The pay structure for this position is tiered based on qualifications, with rates ranging from $18.50 for those enrolled in a CDA or degree program to $20.50 for individuals holding a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or a related field with the requisite credits.
