About the position

The Assistant Teacher for Head Start plays a crucial role in the care, supervision, and safety of children at the center. This position involves assisting staff in planning and implementing an age-appropriate curriculum that meets the developmental needs of children. The Assistant Teacher is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment in both the classroom and playground. A key aspect of this role is to demonstrate compassion and understanding towards the diverse needs of children and families, particularly those from economically and culturally varied backgrounds. In addition to direct care responsibilities, the Assistant Teacher must learn, implement, and adhere to all program policies and procedures. This includes encouraging self-esteem and independence in children, addressing their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs. Health, safety, and nutritional education must be integrated into the overall curriculum planning to ensure a holistic approach to child development. Furthermore, the Assistant Teacher will take on program operations in the absence of the Head Teacher, ensuring continuity and quality of care. The pay structure for this position is tiered based on qualifications, with rates ranging from $18.50 for those enrolled in a CDA or degree program to $20.50 for individuals holding a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or a related field with the requisite credits. Responsibilities

  • Care for and supervise children in the center.

Requirements

  • Valid Child Development Associate (CDA) certification with 12 credits in Early Childhood Education (ECE).
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in ECE or a related field with 12 ECE credits, preferred.
  • Enrolled in a program leading to an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in ECE or a related field with 12 ECE credits to be completed within three years of hire.
  • Enrolled in a CDA credential program, with 12 ECE credits to be completed within two years of hire.
  • Access to reliable, insured transportation.
  • Certification in CT child care first-aid, child CPR, and medication administration.
  • TVCCA Staff Statement of Good Health signed by a qualified medical professional, completed within the last twelve months.
  • Written report of negative tuberculin test or chest x-ray for known prior reactors.
