About the position

The Assistant Teacher position at Save the Children is a full-time role focused on assisting in the instruction of preschool-aged children within the Head Start program. This role is crucial in promoting the social-emotional, physical, and cognitive growth of children. As an Assistant Teacher, you will work closely with the Head Start Teacher and the Center Director to ensure the smooth operation of the classroom and to provide a safe, nurturing environment for the children. You will engage with children throughout the day, providing constant supervision during all learning activities, both indoors and outdoors, and ensuring that the environment is safe and developmentally appropriate. In this role, you will assist in planning and conducting activities tailored to meet the individual needs of children, guiding and facilitating classroom projects and field trips. You will also be responsible for maintaining classroom management using developmentally appropriate techniques and building effective relationships with children and their families. As a frontline representative of Save the Children, you will be expected to uphold the agency's values of Accountability, Ambition, Collaboration, Creativity, and Integrity, while ensuring the safety and security of the children in your care. Additionally, you will participate in parent-teacher conferences, assist children with health and personal habits, and maintain confidentiality regarding children. The position requires flexibility, as you may need to stay until all children have left the program. You will also be expected to engage in professional development and take the lead in the absence of the Head Start Teacher, ensuring that all activities align with Head Start Program Performance Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with children during all activities throughout the day and provide constant supervision.
  • Assist in planning and conducting activities with the Head Start Teacher to meet individual needs of children.
  • Guide and facilitate activities including classroom projects and field trips.
  • Maintain classroom management using developmentally appropriate techniques.
  • Provide a safe and developmentally-appropriate learning environment; interact with children one-on-one and in small groups.
  • Build effective relationships within the organization, the children, and their families.
  • Protect the safety of children by implementing active supervision techniques.
  • Work closely with management to ensure program compliance with Head Start Program Performance Standards.
  • Serve as a liaison between staff and parents; partner with parents in the education of their children.
  • Participate in parent-teacher conferences to discuss children's individual development and progress.
  • Assist children with eating at mealtime to teach social and self-help skills.
  • Assist children in health and personal habits, such as resting and toilet habits.
  • Assist the Head Start Teacher in record keeping; conduct and document observations, assessments, and screenings.
  • Participate in staff meetings, committees, and training sessions.
  • Assist in the mobilization and documentation of matching in-kind activities, goods, and services.

Requirements

  • Child Development Associate (CDA) or equivalent credential, or enrollment in a CDA program to be completed within two years of hire.
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Head Start/Early Head Start program.
  • Successful interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; ability to follow directions and take initiative.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate successfully with individuals and teams at all levels.
  • Proven ability to keep all information on families strictly confidential.
  • Professional proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and online client management systems.
  • Commitment to participate in professional development training including basic first aid and pediatric CPR certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish or other languages used by children and families).
  • Holding a Birth-Kindergarten (B-K) Licensure preferred if in North Carolina.
