About the position

University Settlement is seeking dedicated individuals for various teaching support positions, including Assistant Teacher and Substitute Teacher roles. Our organization has a rich history of over 130 years, partnering with the community to empower individuals and families on the Lower East Side and in Brooklyn. We focus on social and emotional development, fostering a love of learning, and ensuring that every child is prepared for kindergarten and beyond. Our early childhood education programs are designed to narrow the achievement gap and create opportunities for young learners in our communities. As an Assistant Teacher or Substitute Teacher, you will play a crucial role in supporting our mission to provide high-quality education and care to children in our programs. You will work closely with lead teachers to implement curriculum, engage with children in meaningful activities, and create a nurturing environment that promotes learning and development. This position requires a commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive community, as we believe that a broadly diverse team contributes to the richness of our organization and the effectiveness of our programs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist lead teachers in implementing educational programs and activities.
  • Support children's social and emotional development through positive interactions.
  • Create a safe and engaging learning environment for children.
  • Help with classroom management and organization.
  • Participate in parent-teacher conferences and communicate with families about children's progress.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework in education or related field preferred.
  • Experience working with young children in an educational setting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in early childhood education programs.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus.
