About the position

The Assistant to the Mayor - Chief of Staff provides essential policy development, media relations, and staff support to the Mayor of Manchester. This role involves overseeing office personnel, managing constituent services, and coordinating city initiatives. The position requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain effective relationships with various stakeholders, including city employees, governmental officials, and community groups.

Responsibilities

  • Provides constituent services, including intake information from citizens and community groups.
  • Completes special projects at the mayor's request, overseeing public initiatives and coordinating city resources.
  • Participates in the development of the city budget.
  • Directs media relations for the Mayor and the Board of Mayor and Alderman.
  • Coordinates and responds to inquiries from print and television media regarding city policy.
  • Arranges press conferences for the mayor and schedules media availability for the Board of Mayor and Alderman.
  • Develops and directs city programs that cooperate with community groups to address citizen concerns.
  • Represents the Mayor at business and civic meetings to communicate objectives and gather information.
  • Represents the City with other governmental agencies, including the State General Assembly.
  • Meets with community groups and associations to provide input to City Government.
  • Drafts and initiates legislation into the State General Assembly in cooperation with the State League of Cities.
  • Coordinates the City's response to proposed or upcoming legislation.
  • Represents the City to Congressional staff on federal issues of municipal concern.
  • Researches administrative and municipal issues at the mayor's request.
  • Coordinates economic and community development projects within the Mayor's Office and advises the Mayor on related issues.
  • Develops City policy in cooperation with the Mayor and the Board of Mayor and Alderman.
  • Provides training and information to new employees in similar positions.
  • Keeps the supervisor informed about work progress and potential issues.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, and training sessions to stay current on relevant developments.
  • Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a timely manner.
  • Communicates regularly with others to maximize interdepartmental effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration, Political Science, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Experience in local government operations or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in media relations and public communications.
  • Knowledge of city government finance and regulations.
  • Familiarity with the legislative process at city and state levels.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range of $70,000 - $75,000 based on experience and qualifications.
