About the position

The Assistant Transportation Manager is responsible for overseeing the entire Transportation department in conjunction with the Transportation Manager. This individual will fill in as the Transportation Manager and acts with the same authority under the direction of the Transportation Manager. This individual works closely with and through the Transportation Supervisors. This individual ensures that orders are completed in a timely and quality manner by our drivers. This is a complex management position that relies heavily on getting things done through others and providing oversight and direction for various areas within the department, including drivers, helpers, dispatch, dock agents, and fleet management. This individual needs to be a self-starter and have a vision of what is required to take the department to the next level. This individual's leadership will need to be expert with the ability to develop, train, and hold people accountable through clear expectations. The role encompasses several essential functions, including supervisory and management responsibilities, operations and logistics oversight, quality and safety compliance, and human resources management. The Assistant Transportation Manager will supervise and manage the work of all employees in the department, motivate team members, ensure compliance with policies and procedures, and communicate effectively with all crew members. They will also ensure compliance with government regulatory agencies' standards, investigate incidents, enforce safety processes, and organize regular audits. Additionally, the individual will be responsible for interviewing and determining new hires, approving time off requests, performing performance reviews, and mentoring team members. Regular and timely attendance is expected for the position, along with the performance of other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and manage the work of all employees in all areas of the department, including dispatch, drivers, helpers, supervisors, admin staff, dock agents, and fleet management.
  • Motivate and inspire team members to perform above expectations through proper recognition methods and programs.
  • Ensure that all policies and procedures are followed per Newrest and client's requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with all crew members and team members.
  • Hold team members accountable for all expectations.
  • Ensure compliance with all government regulatory agencies' standards (e.g., FDA, USDA, OSHA, EPA, DOT, HACCP).
  • Investigate and complete incidents/accidents documentation.
  • Observe service operations, ensuring all ramp safety, AOA safety, security rules, and regulations are followed, and report any violations.
  • Provide solutions to problems that occur during transportation, unloading, offloading, or any other process.
  • Enforce safety processes and legal requirements for transportation and other processes.
  • Organize regular audits on the runway and set up corrective action plans as appropriate.
  • Perform maintenance on the fleets and follow up to ensure proper safety maintenance.
  • Ensure that all processes conform to customer and Newrest specifications.
  • Comply with good hygiene and manufacturing practices (e.g., HACCP, FIFO).
  • Carry out cleaning, washing, and sanitation of premises following the cleaning plan.
  • Interview and determine the individuals to join your department.
  • Approve time off requests and other leaves of absence.
  • Perform performance reviews for all department team members.
  • Approve all timecards and resolve timecard discrepancies.
  • Mentor and coach team members and provide corrective actions as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's in operations, Logistics, Business Management, or a related field strongly preferred.
  • 5-10 years' experience in inflight catering, airport hub environment, manufacturing, logistics, or food industry managing 100+ non-exempt level employees.
  • Strong leadership experience with experience in start-up or turnaround environments.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate with non-exempt to upper management levels.
  • Strong understanding of logistics and fleet procedures.
  • Understanding of lean manufacturing principles and operational processes.
  • Good knowledge of HACCP & food safety standards.
  • Aptitude in showing self-initiative and follow-through.
  • Detail-oriented and ability to see the big picture.
  • Must have a valid active Driver's License.
  • Ability to pass all required airport security clearance.
